Introduced in 1998 as the second version of Icom's original all-in-one mobile concept, the IC-706MKII refines the original IC-706 with improved receiver performance while keeping the same HF-through-70cm coverage in a compact remote-head design. It was superseded a few years later by the more capable IC-706MkIIG, but it remains a recognizable early example of the all-band mobile-radio concept Icom popularized.
