Introduced in 1988, the IC-781 was Icom's first true 'dream rig' flagship, built around a 5-inch CRT display showing a band scope and detailed operating information at a time when that was unheard of on an amateur transceiver. It defined the user-interface layout Icom would carry into later flagships and remains one of the most iconic and collectible HF radios of its era, prized as much for its CRT display as for its performance.
