Released in 1994, the TS-870S was Kenwood's first HF transceiver built entirely around digital IF processing rather than analog crystal filters, giving operators continuously adjustable filter bandwidth and shape instead of a fixed set of physical filters. This made it especially popular with CW and SSB operators who valued flexible interference rejection. General coverage receive and 100W output rounded out a rig still regarded as an important step in Kenwood's move to DSP-based design.
