Built in the early 1970s, the 500CX was the refined top of Swan Electronics' 500-series tube transceiver line, covering 80-10m SSB/CW/AM with input power ratings around 550W PEP on SSB (360W CW, 125W AM) — the high input-power figures typical of that era's rating conventions. It improved on the earlier 500/500C with better ALC, AGC, and product-detector circuitry for cleaner sideband audio. Swan, founded in Arizona in the early 1960s, was one of the pioneering American SSB transceiver makers, and the 500CX represents the mature end of that tube-based line — a classic sought by Swan and boatanchor collectors today.
