Introduced in 1970/71, the original FT-101 is the rig that established Yaesu as a major force in amateur HF radio: a hybrid design pairing solid-state receiver/driver circuitry with a tube final amplifier, in plug-in modular construction. It spawned a huge family of variants (B, E, EE, EX and more) through the 1970s and 80s, with the FT-101E generally considered the most-produced and most popular of the line. The base FT-101 itself, as the model that started the series, is a genuine piece of ham radio history and a favorite restoration project.
