Launched in 2004, the FT-817ND is the QRP portable transceiver that effectively created its own category: a battery-powered, all-band (HF through 70cm), all-mode radio small enough to fit in a backpack, putting out around 5W. It became the go-to radio for SOTA, POTA and backpack/bike portable operators for over a decade before any real competitor existed, and its huge installed base means third-party accessories, cases and mods are still widely available. Long discontinued in favor of the FT-818ND, it remains highly sought after on the secondhand market.
