About this radio
Heathkit's most successful ham transceiver, released in late 1970 as the direct successor to the HW-100. A build-it-yourself tube kit covering 80-10m, it uses a pair of 6146 finals to deliver 100W PEP on SSB/CW (80W on 10m) through a double-conversion receiver. Over 30,000 units were sold before discontinuation, making it Heathkit's best-selling transceiver ever. Its popularity as a kit meant a whole generation of hams built their first HF rig on an HW-101 workbench, and that nostalgia, plus straightforward tube-era repairability, keeps demand for good examples steady on the secondhand market.
