Introduced in the early 1990s as an upgraded version of the original 1990 FT-1000, the FT-1000D is a large, HF-only flagship base transceiver built around dual independent receivers with separate antenna inputs — a design aimed squarely at serious DXers and contesters working split-frequency pileups. It was, for a time, Yaesu's top-of-the-line HF radio before being succeeded by the FT-1000MP series. Its size, weight and dual-receiver architecture make it a benchmark 'big rig' among collectors of early-90s flagship gear.
