Released in the early 1990s, the FT-890 is a compact, entry-to-mid-level HF transceiver with a fully general-coverage receiver, 100W output, and Yaesu's digital synthesis technology of the era in a smaller cabinet than the flagship FT-990 released around the same time. It was positioned as an accessible step into 'modern' synthesizer-based HF operation for operators not needing the FT-990's full feature set, and its compact size made it popular for both base and semi-portable use.
