Built in 1977 as the successor to the hugely popular FT-101 line, the FT-901DM is a hybrid transceiver — solid state throughout except for a tube final amplifier stage — using the same plug-in circuit board construction as the FT-101 and FT-301 families. Its standout feature for the time was a built-in frequency memory system, letting operators store and instantly recall operating frequencies, a genuine convenience breakthrough in the pre-microprocessor era. Its die-cast front panel and solid mechanical build make surviving examples popular restoration projects today.
